Dr. Jeremy SchefersJeremy Schefers, DVM, PhD, Assistant Clinical Professor/Laboratory Diagnostician, Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory
Dr. Jeremy Schefers is a livestock diagnostician at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. His professional interests include mostly aspects of livestock health and production. He earned all three of his degrees, bachelors of science, doctorate of veterinary medicine and doctorate of philosophy from the University of Minnesota. 

 

 

Dr. Portia SeckersonPortia Seckerson, DVM, Owner & Veterinarian, Northern Valley Livestock Services
Dr. Portia Seckerson is a practicing large animal veterinarian and a co-owner of Northern Valley Livestock Services in Plainview, MN. She is a 2014 graduate from the University of Minnesota. Before graduating from veterinary school, she completed two internships at Peterson and Smith Equine Hospital in Ocala, FL. Dr. Seckerson lives in Chatfield, MN with her husband and two children. In her spare-time she enjoys spending time with her family and helps run her family’s 800 cow dairy and feedlot.

 

 

 

Dr. Amy DahlkeAmy Dahlke, DVM, Food Animal Associate Veterinarian, Anderson Veterinary Service
Dr. Amy Dahlke started her interest in small ruminants growing up on a small farm in rural MN with beef cows and Suffolk sheep. She attended the University of Minnesota for both her undergraduate coursework and veterinary school. Dr. Dahlke graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014. Her family moved to Zumbrota, MN in 2016 where she saw the opportunity to grow the small ruminant portion of the practice. Dr. Dahlke has helped to advance the services and offering of care the clinic provides to its small ruminant clients. She resides with her husband (who is also a veterinarian) and 2 children on their beef cattle and sheep farm.

8:45 am – 9:35 am: Field Necropsies in 2022: Recognizing the Changes on the Outside, and the Impact on the Inside of Cattle – Dr. Jeremy Schefers

We raise cattle differently than when the pathology textbooks were written 40 years ago. At the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify changes in the environment, housing and feeding that have created new problems on the inside of cattle.

Salmonella Dublin: A Complex Disease  Dr. Jeremy Schefers
Salmonella dublin persists despite vaccinations, treatments and cleaning programs. At the end of this presentation you will be able to:

  • List pathogen characteristics and
  • Describe the root cause and resolution of S. dublin on farms

10:45 am – 11:35 am: Equine Emergencies for the Non-Equine Veterinarian Part 1  Dr. Portia Seckerson
There are currently more horses in the U.S. then dairy cattle, so the purpose of this 2 part session is to help large animal veterinarians be more comfortable in providing emergency care to this growing population. At the end of this 2-part session you will be able to:

  • Describe how to treat the animal in its current state
  • Create follow up plans to ensure a successful outcomes
  • Outline specific treatment procedures and protocols via case examples
  • Explain safe handling techniques
  • Discuss limiting stress in emergent situations
  • Improve client communication

  • This program has been approved of 6.0 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval.
  • Availability to participate onsite (limited) and online
  • Breaks and lunch are provided to onsite attendees
  • Handouts are provided to all attendees
  • Registration changes (onsite to online) must be received 72 hours prior to the seminar. Changes incur a $40 administrative fee.
  • Registration cancellations must be received 72 hours prior to the seminar. Cancellation refund less a 10% administrative fee.

Attend the Seminar, which will begin at 8:45 am (central), from anywhere you have an internet connection! Choose the "online" option during registration and you will be emailed a secure link to attend the live session on the day of the seminar. Only the registrant has access with this link as the attendees are monitored and must sign-in with their name and email address. The registrant is also the only one eligible for the CE credits associated with the Seminar. 

What will you experience: Once you have accessed the Seminar your computer screen will be dominated with a direct-feed PowerPoint for clarity of viewing, plus the audio of the presenter as the slides automatically advance on your screen. A small video window on the side of your screen will show the presenter. During the live Q&A session you are able to submit questions.
