Dr. Carrera-Justiz grew up in Miami, Florida, earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Virginia and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. She completed a rotating internship at the University of Missouri, a neurology internship at Veterinary Specialty Hospital in San Diego, and her neurology and neurosurgery residency at Tufts University. Dr. Carrera-Justiz then spent a few years in private practice at the VCA West Los Angeles before moving back to the University of Florida for a clinical faculty position. In her free time, she loves to read, cook, and travel.

Seminar - A Crash Course in Veterinary Neurology!
Be prepared to cover a lot of ground in this highly visual veterinary neurology seminar! We will cover neurological examinations in dogs and cats; seizures; neurological manifestations of systemic disease; the old, weak dog; and puppy and kitten neurology. Hang onto your hats for this fun and informative ride.

Seminar Agenda:

9:00 am - 10:30 am - How to Perform the Neurological Examination in Dogs and Cats
At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Describe the elements of a complete neurological examination in dogs and cats
  • Discuss visual abnormalities of the neurological examinations using interactive videos

10:30am - 10:40am - Break

10:40am - 11:30 am - Seizures: Work up, Diagnosis, and Management
At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Define commonly used terminology for seizures
  • List seizure types
  • Recognize each seizure type
  • Outline initial management of seizures

11:30am  - 11:40am - Break

11:40am - 12:30pm - Seizure Management: Drug Use, Monitoring and Combinations
At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Name commonly used anti-epileptic drugs
  • Describe commonly used anti-epileptic drug side effects and idiosyncrasies
  • Explain how to effectively use each drug individually as well as in various combinations

12:30pm - 1:15pm - Lunch

1:15pm - 2:35pm -Neurologic Manifestations of Systemic Disease: When it's Not Really the Brain. 
The systemic diseases that can make you look neuro. At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Describe systemic diseases that can make the nervous system misbehave
  • Illustrate abnormalities through the use of cases

2:35pm - 2:45pm - Break

2:45pm - 3:35pm - The Old, Weak Dog
A scenario all to commonly seen! At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Describe various approaches and recommendations for diagnostics and treatment to these types of cases with the use of images and video

3:35pm - 3:45pm - Break

3:45pm - 4:35 pm - Puppy and Kitten Neurology
At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate the immature dog and cat
  • Explain the most commonly seen conditions in this unique age group

You have the option to attend the Seminar, which will begin at 9:00 am (central), from anywhere you have an internet connection! Choose the "online" option when you register and you will be emailed the secure internet link to attend the live session on the day of the seminar. Only the purchaser will have access with this link as the attendees are monitored and must sign-in with their name. The registrant is also the only one eligible for the CE credits associated with the Seminar. 

What will you experience: Once you have accessed the Seminar your computer screen will be dominated with a direct-feed PowerPoint for clarity of viewing, plus the audio of the presenter as the slides automatically advance on your screen. A small video window on the side of your screen will show the presenter. During the live Q&A session you are able to submit questions.
