Dr. John Lewis obtained his BS from Bucknell University in 1993 and his VMD from University of Pennsylvania in 1997. He spent 5 years in general practice prior to returning to Penn for a residency in dentistry and oral surgery. Dr. Lewis became a Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry (AVD) in 2004 and a diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) in 2005. Dr. Lewis rose to the rank of Associate Professor of Dentistry and Oral Surgery, residency director and Chief of Surgery. Dr. Lewis' interests include oral surgical oncology, maxillofacial fracture repair, maxillofacial reconstruction, new therapies for treatment of feline oral squamous cell carcinoma, and lasers in oral surgery and dentistry. Dr. Lewis is Past President of the American Veterinary Dental Society and Editor of the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry. Dr. Lewis performs Dentistry and Oral Surgery at NorthStar VETS in Robbinsville, New Jersey.
Seminar Description Dentistry is more fun when you have a foundation of knowledge to rely upon! Most of us who have been in practice for a while did not receive much formal training in dentistry while in veterinary school. This seminar will provide a foundation in good examination skills, disease recognition, diagnostic interpretation, and treatments of the most common dental diseases.
SEMINAR DAY-THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9 8:00 am – 9:00 am: Registration & Continental Breakfast 9:00 am – 10:00 am: Say Ahhh...Oral Examination, Applied Oral Surgery & Administering Nerve Blocks You may be able to get a lot more information from your conscious and anesthetized oral examinations. This lecture will discuss how to approach an oral examination, normal anatomy and nerve blocks in dogs and cats. 10:00 am – 10:15 am: Break 10:15 am – 11:15 am: Common and Uncommon Oral Diseases in Dogs and Cats During this session, we will discuss common diseases and rarities that you may see in practice: it's all about disease recognition! 11:15 am – 12:15 pm: Dental Pearls for the General Practitioner Building on a previous hour of lecture, lesser known diagnoses, and tenets of dentistry will be discussed, along with tips, tricks, and "light bulb moments" that make dentistry easier for you in practice. 12:15 pm – 1:15 pm: Lunch 1:15 pm – 2:15 pm: Dental Radiograph Interpretation- Interactive Session Turn out the lights and pass the laser pointer. The best way to become good at interpreting dental radiographs, is, well, interpreting radiographs. 2:15 pm – 2:30 pm: Break 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm: Extraction Techniques in Dogs and Cats This session will focus on the firmly rooted tooth that needs to come out. Instrumentation and flap techniques for various teeth will be discussed. 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm: Complications of Extractions and How to Avoid Them The phrase "It's like pulling teeth..." came about for a reason. There are many things that can go wrong when extracting a firmly rooted tooth. We will discuss how to prevent them, and how to deal with them if or when it happens.
