Dr. Alleman received his DVM from Louisiana State University and practiced companion animal medicine and surgery for 9 years in private small animal practice in New Orleans. During that time he was board certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners with a specialty in companion animal practice. Dr. Alleman then completed a clinical pathology residency at the University of Florida and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists with a specialty in clinical pathology and completed his PhD degree in molecular biology of vector-borne diseases. During his professional career he has received numerous teaching, research and patent awards. In 2012 he received the Louisiana State University Distinguished Alumni Award. He is a former Professor, Service Chief, Resident Coordinator and Director of Laboratories at the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine. He is currently CEO of Lighthouse Veterinary Consultants.

9:00 am – 9:50 am: What's New in Hematology: The Hemogram, the Blood Smear, the Dot Plots and the Patient-Part 1 The amount of information available to practitioners regarding the hematological evaluation of a patient has never be so comprehensive. At the end of this session participants will be able to:
- Interpret, in detail, findings on the hemogram
- Recognize clinically significant changes on the dot plots
- Formation of direct evaluation of blood film, if needed
- Manage the patient
9:50 am – 10:00 am: Break
10:00 am – 10:50 am: What's New in Hematology: The Hemogram, the Blood Smear, the Dot Plots and the Patient-Part 2 The amount of information available to practitioners regarding the hematological evaluation of a patient has never be so comprehensive. At the end of this session participants will be able to:
- Interpret, in detail, findings on the hemogram

10:50 am – 11:00 am: Break
11:00 am-11:50 am: The Complete Urinalysis: Interpreting Results and Images from Automated Analyzers Urinalysis is best performed within 2 hours of collection to avoid complications of in vitro forming of elements and degeneration of cells. At the end of this session participants will be able to:
- Discuss the use of an in-house, easy and reliable way to evaluate urine sediment using manual evaluation and show of images generated by an automated urinalysis analyzer
- Describe the accurate recognition and interpretation of clinically relevant formed elements in urine
11:50 am – 1:00 pm: Lunch
1:00 pm – 1:50 pm: Cytology in Practice: Sample Collection, Slide Preparation and Guidelines for Interpretation There are three critical steps in using cytology effectively in practice, sample collection, slide preparation and following the guidelines for a systematic interpretation. If any of these steps are deficient, the results will be adversely affected. At the end of this session participants will be able to:
- Describe the parameters for successful use of cytology in veterinary practice
1:50 pm – 2:00 pm: Break
2:00 pm – 2:50 pm: Cytology/Hematology Case Challenges Cases where the hematology and cytology diagnostics were important in diagnosing and monitoring patient diseases will be presented. At the end of this session participants will be able to:
- Describe the important aspects of laboratory diagnostics in cases with frequently seen abnormalities
2:50 pm – 3:00 pm – Break
3:00 pm – 3:50 pm: The Cytological Interpretation of Lymph Nodes in Dogs and Cats Lymph nodes are probably the most organ most frequently evaluated cytologically. At the end of this session participants will be able to:
- Describe a systematic way to easily approach the cytological evaluation of lymph nodes in the dog and cat
- Differentiate diagnostics between the canine and feline species
