Become involved in disaster and emergency preparedness and response

The Minnesota Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps (MNVMRC) was established in 2004 and is an "all-hazards", "all-emergencies" volunteer responder program of the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association.  It is designed to provide medical aid to animals and provide assistance to local veterinary infrastructure which may be affected by local or regional emergencies/disasters.  The MNVMRC also plays a role in public health education and is available to provide assistance during animal disease outbreaks which impact public health.  The MNVMRC is comprised of volunteer members of the veterinary profession including veterinarians, veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, as well as the students of these professions.

Deployment of the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps occurs only when requested by the state or local agency having jurisdiction in that emergency.  The MNVMRC does not “self-deploy” and adheres to the Incident Command System.  During an emergency/disaster, the MNVMRC may integrate with other agencies or groups whose goals or missions are similar.

The Minnesota Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps may be asked to respond to environmental disasters such as floods, fires, tornadoes and blizzards or other disasters such as radiological contamination or chemical spills. Members may be called upon to assist with animal care and treatment, evacuation, vaccination, specimen collection, decontamination, euthanasia, necropsy, collecting epidemiological information, supervisory or office support.  Members may also be called to work in a practice to temporarily replace someone else who has gone to assist in an emergency.

Participation in any emergency/disaster response is voluntary.

Training opportunities for members are available, and some trainings are provided at no cost to the member.  Please look for train opportunities at the upcoming 2018 MVMA Annual Meeting. Please note that there is a minimum level of training that must be completed to be an active member.

Individuals with veterinary medical training (veterinarians, veterinary technicians and assistants and students of these programs) are invited to become active members of the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps.  To join, please visit https://www.mnresponds.org/ to fill out an application online.

Opportunities for further involvement also exist within MVMA Disaster and Emergency Preparedness Committee which oversees the MNVMRC.
